Tiny Ruins: The Priest With Balloons (Live on Radiant)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  10 plays

I first saw New Zealand’s Tiny Ruins last year and was instantly hooked. And a homemade cd of her tunes certainly didn’t dissuade me. So I was very happy when she was back in the country and able to come onto Radiant for a live set and a chat. Get to know the gorgeous folk stylings of Tiny Ruins with her Radiant set - available as a free download here, or through the podcast.

She’s got an album coming later in the year. Keep an ear out!

Four new podcasts! The Maladies & Michael Crafter, Charge Group, Kitchen’s Floor and Re-TROS!

Hey all,

Three weeks worth of shows here, with both performances from the most recent show (Monday 28th). We’ve had some incredible live music happening in the studio, so enjoy!

And be sure to listen in on Monday - it’s the 50th show, and I have NZ’s Tiny Ruins playing live.

Feb 14: Valentine’s Day featuring The Maladies & Michael Crafter
Being a valentine’s day, I thought i’d get tremendous Sydney group The Maladies in to play some sugary sweet covers. But then I remembered that lots of us are single, and some are even bitter, so I brought in powerviolence duo Michael Crafter to stop things from getting too cute. Two extremes. Enjoy.

Feb 21: Charge Group
It’s been a while since we last heard from Charge Group, but with a new album and tour on the way there’s plenty to look forward to. Which is just as well - I was starting to miss their slow-burning, violin-laced indie. We got a preview of their return on Radiant when the guys came into the studio for a chat and some songs.

Feb 28: Kitchen’s Floor
A couple of months ago Kitchen’s Floor came into the second FBi studio on a Saturday morning and smashed out an awesome 10 song set. With a new lineup that included Liam of Bitch Prefect/Dud Pills/Peak Twins, Joe of Slug Guts and Per Purpose and Andrew aka Cured Pink on keyboards, it’s a great preview of their upcoming record.

Feb 28: Rebuilding the Rights of Statues
Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues (aka Re-TROS) are a great Chinese band who came to Australia supporting their heroes Gang of Four. I was lucky enough to have them in the studio for an interview and a live song, which was played using an unusual arrangement for the typically guitar-driven group - a loop, keys, tambourine and vocals. The result was great, as was the interview - a great insight into the Chinese indie scene.

The Hummingbirds: She Knows (Live on Radiant)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  21 plays

Podcasts are up! Finally. Some technical issues with them today, but it’s all sorted.

Here it is, the motherload. As always, please subscribe to our podcast if you’re an itunes user (the link is above) and have them all delivered automatically! But here’s download links too.

February 7: Alps, Bare Grillz and Mere Women (all live in the studio)

This was a wild show. I welcomed Alps back to the studio for the second time, this time performing with a backing band - all three members of Bare Grillz, who also performed a set. And to round it out, we had new Sydney act Mere Women perform as well. It was a mini gig in the studio! With snappy interviews and three live sets, this podcast is for the live music nuts. All three sets sound incredible for our humble studio, and the performances are great - one of my favourite shows so far.

January 31: Unity Floors (Live + Interview)

I first heard Unity Floors a couple of months ago and was really impressed - for a brand new band, their 2-piece indie was just straight-up great music. So i got them on the show. With just a demo out, it’s a great chance to find a new favourite Sydney band - their live set was a lot of fun and it was great to hear about how they got started.

January 24: The Hummingbirds (Live + Interview)

Plenty of folks were pretty shocked when, 17 years after breaking up, The Hummingbirds were quietly added to the lineup of this year’s Big Day Out. A fantastic, jangly Sydney pop band with a handful of EPs and LPs released in the early 90s, they’ve gained quite a reputation as their music has been rediscovered over the last few years. So I was stoked when their two singers, Alannah Russack and Simon Holmes, agreed to come in for an acoustic set and interview on the eve of this one-off show. And it was worth the anticipation, with two tremendous songs and a great chat about getting the band back together after almost two decades.

January 17: La Dispute (Interview) and To The North (Live + Interview)

On their second tour of Australia, rising post-hardcore band La Dispute took time out of their busy schedule for a fantastic interview about overseas touring and the importance of community in the punk scene. And their tour mates, To The North, also came in for both an interview and live set. To top it all off, we had everyone in the studio together for one last interview. Killer!

January 10: David Studdert (Live + Interview)

Former Tactics frontman David Studdert came into the studio for a rare live performance and a lengthy chat as he prepares to release his solo album “Hanging By A Thread”. Great interview, great songs, great show.

The track up top is The Hummingbirds with She Knows. SO LUSH.

Five great podcasts for your perusal. Enjoy.

Last night’s Valentine’s Special with The Maladies and Michael Crafter will be up soon. And listen in this week - Charge Group are live in the studio! I haven’t seen them live for a long time… pretty excited.

Donny Benet: Gimme Your Heat

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  0 plays

Apologies for the delay in podcasts. Hoping to have it all up to date over the next week or so. First podcast up is from Donny Benet, who played some amazing disco live in the Radiant studio! Keep an ear out for that synth solo at the end, holy shit! And of course, the full set and interview is yours to download here or on the podcast.

Hey all,

After Monday’s incredible show - surely the highlight of my short time on air, with a huge thanks to everyone who played - i decided to do something a little more special than a regular podcast.

I’ve put the Christmas tracks performed on the show up as a free EP download on Bandcamp. Download it, share it, enjoy it, support the artists, etc.

The tracklist:

1. Kirin J Callinan - Merry Christmas 02:15
2. Packwood - Oh Holy Night 04:02
3. The Maple Trail - Do You Hear What I Hear? 03:52
4. A Casual End Mile & R. Somerset - Silent Night 03:26
5. The Preachers - Run Rudolph Run 02:20
6. The Holy Soul - Six White Boomers 04:35

There’s 7 more live tracks from the show - each artist performed an original - and they’ll all go up as part of a more conventional podcast soon.

Thanks for your support in 2010 and have a great break.

The Preachers: Christmas Worm's Quest For Fresh Apples

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  50 plays

EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD: The Preachers - Christmas Worm’s Quest For Fresh Apples

The Preachers have been good friends of Radiant since its inception, so they were an obvious choice for A Very Radiant Christmas, a massive episode that will see a handful of bands perform Christmas songs and originals live in the studio. And they kindly accepted and set to work on something festive.

And it must’ve gone well, because they ended up recording it - a cover of DjanimalsChristmas Worm’s Quest For Fresh Apples - before the show has even happened. And they’ve kindly offered it as an exclusive Christmas download right here!

Check it out, and tune in tonight from 9pm - I’ll be having them, The Maple Trail, The Holy Soul, Kirin J Callinan, A Casual End Mile, R. Somerset and Packwood all performing live. Plus Christmas tracks from the likes of Wintercoats, Reigning Sound, Black Lips, Kes Band and heaps more. Mayhem.

Woollen Kits: Live on Radiant

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  0 plays

Hey all! After a bit of time off I’m back with a couple of podcasts and some news on the show.

First podcast is from Melbourne’s Woollen Kits, who came down for a weekend to play RIP Society’s Success Summit. And they were kind enough to play a set and have a chat beforehand. It’s some great garagey pop, reminiscent of Beat Happening and Modern Lovers. You can download it here. There’s a preview up top.

Second podcast is from Dead Farmers, who came in for a chat following their tour of China and Japan. They had some cool tales, so check it out!

This week’s episode is going to be particularly special… it’s called A Very Radiant Christmas and will feature a bunch of acts performing a Christmas song and an original each. Expect to hear The Maple Trail, The Holy Soul, The Preachers, A Casual End Mile, Rob Irish (Sooners), Packwood and hopefully more.

And 2011 is going to be a pretty huge year. I’ll be welcoming La Dispute, To The North and Dave Studdert (Tactics) into the studio, and have some goddamn exciting things that i’m working on. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, apologies for the downtime, things have been hectic. Keep sending in your music and thanks for listening. And have a good festive break. x

Seaworthy: Live on Radiant

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  10 plays

When Radiant was first created, Seaworthy was one of the first names decided to invite into the studio. A Sydney artist with ten years of releases and performances under his belt, he creates beautiful, sparse textures from looped guitar and field recordings, balancing an experimental approach with a very natural sounding result.

So it was fantastic to have him in the studio this week, chatting about his new release Two Lakes (with Matt Rösner), his approach to music, and plenty more. And he backed that up with a gorgeous performance live in the studio. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

You can download the full performance and interview here, or even better, subscribe to our podcast to get this and many other live performances and interviews.

That’s all for a few weeks here on Radiant. I’m taking a short break, and will be back on November 22. There’s an incredible guest almost confirmed… watch this space.

Dimi Dero Inc: Live on Radiant

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  20 plays

Dimi Dero Inc. are a bunch of French dudes who fell in love with Australia’s underground some time ago via import records and word-of-mouth. Fast-forward to now and they’re in a band that can hold its own amongst Australia’s best, having supported The Drones, X, The Holy Soul and many more.

In town on their third Australian tour, they stopped by the studio wine in hand to play a fantastic set and have a chat.

Download it here or get it on the podcast.

The Garbage & The Flowers: Live on Radiant

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  10 plays

A band that has enjoyed a small but dedicated following since their formation in Wellington, NZ over twenty years ago, The Garbage & The Flowers brought their ramshackle charm to the studio for an interview and live-to-air performance. With a setlist that spanned their entire career (both their latest single Alamo Rose and first single Carousel were played) and a chat about their career to date, it’s well worth a listen.

Intentions: Abdicate (Live on Radiant)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  10 plays

I first became aware of Intentions’ music when Morris Coffey came in to play some of his fave recordings from Sydney Live (RIP). Fast forward half a year, and i’ve finally got them in the studio after a lineup change and a brand new EP. And it was well worth the wait - the guys sit in a lovely middle ground between indie and hardcore/punk, and played it well in the cramped confines of the Radiant studio. They also had a chat about how they got together and what it’s like to be a DIY band in Sydney.

Download it here or check it out on the podcast.

Podcast: Interview with Matheson Vaughn (Lesstalk Records)

Matheson of Lesstalk Records came into the studio to tell us about his label and the upcoming event Artless Armchair 6, a boutique festival in the NSW countryside. It was a really fun, snappy interview and we played a bunch of covers of kids TV themes from a new compilation released for the festival. He was kind enough to let us include them in the podcast, making this a pretty fun listen.

Check it out here or on the podcast.

Mick Harvey: Live on Radiant

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]  21 plays

When the possibility of having Mick Harvey in the studio first popped up, I knew it would be something special. With a career that has included being a member of The Bad Seeds & The Birthday Party, a string of great solo records, and collaborations with a diverse range of fantastic artists, he’s certainly got a lot to talk about.

And that’s what we did. Listen in as we chat about his new project The Nearly Brothers, his work on PJ Harvey’s upcoming record, his time in The Bad Seeds, his solo career and plenty more.

And in addition, he also ended the interview with two as-yet unreleased songs performed live in the studio. The first is from an upcoming solo project, while the second (which can be streamed above) is an unreleased PJ Harvey song. Splendid.

Click here to download the full interview and set.

It’s also on the podcast, which I reckon you should subscribe to. Plenty of great past performances to be downloaded, and many more to come.
